Celtic advance in style but Ajer is doubt for derby
It wasn’t particularly friendly in the Friends Arena. There was fighting between some Celtic fans and baton-wielding Swedish police at half-time, there were seven bookings and a simmering seam of bad temper showed a couple of times. Kristoffer Ajer came off with a groin strain which is likely to rule him out of Sunday’s Old Firm game and Odsonne Edouard also hobbled off...It wasn’t particularly friendly in the Friends Arena. On this day
In 1901 Hubert Cecil Booth patented a vacuum cleaner that sucked in dust and retained it by means of a filter. His machine was used at Westminster Abbey in 1902 in preparation for the coronation of King Edward VII; in 1918 Vladimir Lenin survived an assassination attempt in Moscow, after being shot twice by Social Revolutionary party member Fanya Kaplan; in 1941 German troops blocked the last rail supply route to Leningrad, during the 872-day siege of the city; in 2009 the Democratic Party of Japan unseated the ruling Liberal Democrats in general elections, ending 54 years of near-unbroken rule.
Nature notes
A scum is forming on some lakes and ponds, especially those without any plants such as water lilies on them. This is a phenomenon sometimes described as “the breaking of the meres”. The scum is formed of blueish-green algal blooms. These develop in hot weather in water that is rich in nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. The water itself acquires a green gleam. Occasionally signs are put up beside lakes warning people that the algae can irritate the skin, and advising that neither people nor dogs should swim in them. Fish such as roach swim lower in the water. However, moorhens and coots are swimming about, many of them still with families. The young coots especially are very different from their parents, being grey with pale throats, and sometimes people are puzzled by what species they are when they are seen on their own.
